Peter Parker has finally found the balance he's longed for between his love for Mary Jane Watson and his responsibilities as Spider-Man. The city of New York and it's citizens are at last coming around and appreciating everything he has done as his crime-fighting alter ego, and Peter is in the running for a staff job at the Daily Bugle. However, everything Peter has worked for is about to unravel. Flint Marko, while fleeing prison, is caught in an accident that displaces molecules and is transformed into the Sandman, a new super villain who is able to change his body into any shape of sand he sees fit. When Peter learns of a connection between The Sandman and the murder of his Uncle Ben, he will stop at nothing as Spider-Man to capture him. But before Peter can do so he discovers a mysterious black substance has turned his suit black, and has brought forth a darker side of Parker and Spidey nobody has seen before. Peter begins to give into this new dark personality, starts to abandon the ones he loves the most and in turn his best friend Harry Osborn takes up his late father's mantle as The New Goblin. Quickly Parker begins a new romance with his lab partner, the beautiful Gwen Stacy but in doing so Peter sets off a rival Bugle photographer, a troubled young man by the name of Eddie Brock who is obsessed with Stacy. Little does Peter know the black substance has its sights set on Eddie else as well. Brock is turned into Venom, a arch-foe that mirrors everything Spider-Man can do. Peter is forced to become the strong-willed hero he has forgotten about if he hopes to defeat his greatest threat yet.

No Full Star Trek Trailer Till Summer And Other Warp Speed Tidbits

The guys over at Trek Movie have really managed to get themselves deeply embedded in the production of the new Star Trek movie. At least as deeply embedded as the ridiculously secretive production is going to let anyone get. They aren’t exactly fan friendly so far, are they? Star Trek really should have it’s own OneRing.net. But the TrekMovie boys do their best, and they managed to get Star Trek co-writer and exec producer Robert Orci to show up and interact with fans on their site. Orci answered at least some of the questions we all still have, though the trailer cleared up some of the big ones. For instance we now know they aren’t painting the Enterprise pink and putting it on rollerskates. Most of what Orci was able to add to the Trek equation was actually pretty encouraging, especially if you’re a Trek fan… which I am. Here’s a few of the highlights: Don’t expect a new, full trailer to replace the meager little teaser trailer we have now until sometime in mid-summer. Too long to wait if you ask me. They’re shooting for a PG-13 rating. They are trying to use real sets and location shoots instead of lame green screen as much as possible. A full on image of the Enterprise will be released to us fanboys soon. Greg Grunberg is busy on something else, and won’t get his cameo. Making of documentaries are being shot… but don’t expect to be allowed to see them until after the film is released, probably as part of a DVD set. Basically, what it all boils down to is Abrams is going to tease the hell out of this thing until he’s Cloverfielded everyone again. I just hope that doesn’t mean Trek will have the same, massive, “over it” 68% second week dropoff at the box office. That’s just a few of the big points Orci made. For more surf over to our friends at TrekMovie, and while you’re there tell them to send some Trek awesomeness this fan’s way. Hey, I have Chris Pine’s autograph. Doesn’t that make him my best friend? While I wait around for Chris’s phone call, CanMag also had some good news on the Trek front. They spoke with Anton Yelchin, the guy playing young Pavel Chekov in the film. It seems that Yelchin, unlike some of the other cast members (Zachary Quinto in particular) is actually a fan of Trek. He talks a lot about how much he really enjoys the original series and says, “ “Would I ever have thought that I'd be on the Enterprise? No. It's pretty great.” While Quinto is over in the corner getting all method, it’s nice to know there will be at least one person on the Enterprise bridge who’s geeking out as much as we would. Yelchin also really seems to get Chekov, who let’s face it, was a pretty crazy character. If you’ve gone back and rewatched any of Chekov’s episodes recently, maybe in the remastered versions they’ve been running late-nights on the weekends, you know what I mean. But crazy in a good way. Yelchin gets that and says, “ “Chekov is the weirdest guy. Watching the old show really makes you realize just how strange, how incredible it was that they brought, first of all, a Russian character on right smack in the middle of the cold war. There's one scene where they're talking to Apollo or something, or the god that used to be Apollo in the old show. Apollo's like, 'I am Apollo!' and Chekov is like, 'And I am the czar of all Russias.' That's not how I choose to do the accent but they gave him these lines that he really is the weirdest, weirdest character so it's a lot of fun.”

Sculpture 'will be icon of South'

A public sculpture twice as high as the Angel of the North and intended to be visible from road, rail and air, is to be built in the south of England.

Five artists have been shortlisted for the £2m public art commission sited on a hilltop in north Kent, including Turner Prize winner Mark Wallinger.

The work will mark the new Ebbsfleet International station and the planned transformation of Ebbsfleet Valley.

It is expected to be completed on a site next to the A2 by 2010.
"It is an iconic thing we're trying to create here," said Allan Willett, chairman of the selection committee, and Lord Lieutenant of Kent.

He said the new sculpture, the height of Nelson's Column, would represent the regeneration of north west Kent, and the growth of London eastwards.

War protest
Wallinger won the 2007 Turner Prize for State Britain, in which he recreated in a gallery Brian Haw's anti-Iraq war protest mounted outside Parliament.

The other shortlisted names to design the sculpture are French artist Daniel Buren, Turner Prize winners Richard Deacon and Rachel Whiteread, whose work has included a concrete cast of the inside of an entire Victorian terraced house, and sculptor Christopher Le Brun.

They will develop proposals for the 50 metre (164ft) Ebbsfleet Landmark over the next three months, with the final work to be chosen by a selection panel.

Wallinger said the site was in an area with a rich history, dating back to the Bronze Age
"Its current position at the nexus of road and rail links to Europe emphasises its position as a gateway to London and England - a position it has enjoyed since the Romans built Watling Street.

Britney 'has seen psychiatrist'

Britney Spears has seen a psychiatrist for "mental issues", according to US talk show host Barbara Walters.
Walters said that the 26-year-old's manager, Sam Lutfi, had contacted her.

Mr Lutfi told her the pop star was suffering from "mental issues which are treatable", Walters said on her show, The View.

Spears lost custody of her two sons earlier this month after refusing to hand them over to her ex-husband at a scheduled pick-up time.

Mr Lutfi had been staying with Spears constantly, "and he got in touch with us", Walters said.
'Trouble sleeping'

"He said that she has been to a psychiatrist and that she, I assume, is starting some kind of treatment."

"She has been having mood swings. She's been having trouble sleeping, and also she is in touch with her mother - and her mother has been very supportive of whatever it is that Britney is going to do," she said. Troubled Spears filed for divorce from ex-husband Kevin Federline in November 2006.

Clapton and Police play Park gigs

Eric Clapton and The Police are to headline this year's Hard Rock Calling festival in London's Hyde Park.

Clapton will lead the first night of the two-day event and will be joined by special guests John Mayer and ex-girlfriend Sheryl Crow.

The Police will top the line-up on the second night, with KT Tunstall and Starsailor also on the bill.
The gigs are on 28-29 June with tickets on sale on 1 February. It is part of Hard Rock's Ambassadors of Rock Tour.
'Amazing'

The concert will mark Clapton's first headlining gig at Hyde Park for more than a decade.
He has not performed in Britain since a series of Cream reunion concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in 2005.

"We are very excited about this year's Hard Rock Calling event as we have two amazing headline acts, following on the tradition from the past two years which saw Roger Waters, The Who, Peter Gabriel and Aerosmith perform," said Toby Leighton-Pope from organisers Live Nation. Tickets for the gigs cost £50 for the Saturday, £65 for Sunday or £110 for the weekend.

John wins Big Brother hijack show

John Loughton, a 20-year-old politician from Edinburgh, has taken the £50,000 prize as the winner of E4's series Big Brother: Celebrity Hijack.

He got 54% of the vote in the final of the E4 show, beating circus performer Emilia Arata, 18.
Loughton chairs the Scottish Youth Parliament and is studying for a degree in politics and sociology.

He beat 11 other "talented" young people in a series which reinvented the Celebrity Big Brother format.

Celebrity control
Channel 4 bosses decided to change the show after last year's race row involving reality TV star Jade Goody and Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty.

However, the new programme has not generated as much interest as the old format had done previously.

Last year's Celebrity Big Brother opened with 7.1 million viewers on Channel 4 alone.
Celebrity Hijack launched earlier this month with a combined total of 3.4 million viewers on Channel 4 and E4.

This year 12 housemates were selected for their intelligence and talent while celebrities took it in turns to take over the role of Big Brother.

Little Britain's Matt Lucas was the first star to take control followed by Jimmy Carr, Joan Rivers, Brian Sewell and Ian Wright.

Loughton became the early favourite to win the show after passing a secret task set by Lucas.
He was directed through a hidden earpiece to do whatever Lucas ordered and was also made to insult his fellow housemates, dance an Irish jig, feign an attack of cramp and crawl around the house on all fours.

By passing the task Loughton earned himself a guaranteed place in the final. Conceptual artist Amy Jackson, 21, came third and Anthony Ogogo, 19, a boxer, from Lowestoft, was fourth

US writers will not block Grammys

The Grammy Awards will go ahead as normal on 10 February after the striking Writers Guild of America agreed to let writers work on the show.

The guild says it wants to offer support to musicians also facing challenges getting "compensation for the use of their work in new media."

The strike began in early November over payments for DVD sales and downloads.
It has already derailed the Golden Globes ceremony and leaves a question mark hanging over the Oscars.

Last week the guild agreed not to picket the event, suggesting an agreement was possible.
Patric M Verrone, President of the Writers Guild of America West said: "In the interest of advancing our goal of achieving a fair contract, the WGAW Board felt that this decision should be made."

The Recording Academy, which organises the Grammys, had already pledged to run the show with or without the support of writers.

Academy president Neil Portnow said it was "gratified by the WGA's decision to grant the interim agreement we requested for our milestone 50th annual Grammy Awards".
Justin Timberlake is nominated for five Grammys including best record
He added: "Having our talented writers on the team further ensures the highest level of creativity and innovation, something our audience has come to expect every year."
The writers' strike is now in its 13th week.

Informal talks are continuing between guild leaders and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents more than 350 production companies.
It follows a similar procedure used to resolve a dispute with the Directors Guild of America. But the writers want about three times as much money for DVD releases and downloads than the directors achieved.
